El Nacional is a vast and luminous new space dedicated solely to one of Spain's most precious cultural resources: food. Located just a few steps of the famous Passeig de Gracia, El Nacional is a glass and iron building which recalls the refined elegance of 1920's Europe while offering up cuisine and drinks which range from traditional classics to more modern fare from around Spain. If you're well-versed in Spain's culinary scene, you might call El Nacional Barcelona's answer to the wildly successful Mercado de San Miguel in Madrid.
The space is home to four specialized restaurants and four specialized bars. The restaurant spaces consist of La Paradeta, an airy cafe-style space dedicated to light meals like sandwiches, salads, and pastries; La Taperia which, as its name suggests, is home to classic tapas from around the country; La Llotja which serves the fresh seafood; and La Braseria which stands out for its wood-fire grill.
My favorite part of El Nacional, however, are actually the bars. A refreshing drink with some tasty snacks is a Spanish classic, and they have bars specializing in cocktails, beer with preserves (try the house-cured olives or the anchovies), wine with Spanish charcuterie, and a decadent but woefully expensive cava and oyster bar.
If you've worked up a thirst exploring the city and happen to be headed to the old quarter via the Passeig de Gracia, El Nacional is an ideal spot to refuel with an ice cold Spanish vermouth and some briny olives.
I decided to go and celebrate my daughter and wife´s Saint´s day, and I hti bullseye when we tasted a delicious octopus rice and delicious tapas. Excellent location right next to the sea and the waiters very attentive and professional. Fair price for the quality of the food. Anyhow, it is yet to be discovered and you are left with no choice but to return.
A good place to eat and feel at home. Whenever I go to Barcelona and Mataró I can not help but be seduced by its kitchen, specializing in tapas and patatas bravas, a treat for the taste buds! Fully recommended.
