The Governor of Hawaii, John Kuakini, had this mansion built in the year 1838. From 1844 to 1914, the palace was using the Hawaiian royal family as a summer home. In 1925 it became a museum and today almost everything that was in the original monarchy house has been restored. This was the last home of King Kamehameha I. The views from the garden are beautiful and when there is a gentle breeze blowing it is the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon.
The First Bank of the United States is on the corner of Third Street, and was built and founded with the aim of formalizing a single currency for the United States of America that would replace all the different coins being used at the time. It was a very important step for the unification of the country, that was then slowly abandoning the idea of different colonies.
The Eldorado Palace is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, right in front of Central Park. It is a beautiful Art Deco building in the typical style of the early twentieth century. Many celebrities, including Faye Dunaway, Moby and Michael J Fox have lived here. The distinguishing features are undoubtedly the twin towers which offer stunning views across the park.
The city of Boston is characterized by European-style architecture with far fewer high-rise buildings than you'll find in other American cities. The few skyscrapers are mostly concentrated in the Financial District. One of them is the Custom House Tower, the first skyscraper in Boston. The building was completed in 1849, and has the appearance of a Greek temple with Doric columns and a domed skylight. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the structure was topped by a clock tower 151 meters high. Despite not being the tallest skyscraper in the city, it still catches the eye, perhaps due to its white granite walls which stand out among the other buildings nearby. Initially a customs house, it was bought by the Mariott chain and converted into a hotel. From the luxurious lobby, a short elevator ride takes you up the 26 floors to reach the roof terrace where you can enjoy breathtaking views across the harbor.
The Old Custom House, an imposing building with red pitched roofs, is located a few hundred meters from Mallory Square among a cluster of quaint wooden cottages. It is one of the city's most important historical buildings and now houses the Museum of Art and History of Key West, where there is also a section dedicated to one of the most distinguished historical characters of the city: Ernest Hemingway. A few steps away is Mallory Square, famous for being a place for watching the sunset, and the street performers who come here every night.
Have you seen the movie "I Am Legend"? It's a Will Smith movie directed by Francis Lawrence and based on a book written by Matheson. Well, now I'd like to show you where it was filmed! The perfect porch of a typical American home overlooking Washington Avenue opposite NYU, it is so perfect that it hardly seems real.
The Glasgow Lighthouse isn't a lighthouse at all ... of course, it wouldn't make any sense to have a lighthouse in the city center! It is located in a very narrow street, the Mitchell Street, a short walk from Buchanan Street. You have to look up to see it because the road is so narrow. The Glasgow Herald newspaper once had its headquarters here, but today it houses temporary exhibitions. It is an example of the work of Mackintosh, one of Scotland's best architects.
I was a summer intern here and got the chance to tour the archives. You can see birth and death certificates and civil suits, perfectly preserved & legible, from back when the town was still called New Amsterdam.
