Bars in Hanoi
Studio Bar & Lounge
Studio Bar & Lounge is a very European-style bar that opened in 2009. You can find imported drinks (whiskey, champagne, wine, etc) which are impossible to find in other bars in Hanoi. Prices are, of course, higher than in other bars. The clientele is mainly expatriates and sometimes tourists too. Meals are also served, mainly Western cuisine. A 33cl beer costs 35,000 Dongs, which is almost € 1.5 (May 2009)
Bars in Hoi An
Before and Now Pub
(1)
It is the place where everyone goes at night in Hoi An, the meeting place, in the heart of the city. During the day it's a restaurant (no big deal) but at night it's very busy with a terrific atmosphere and music. The restaurant is upstairs with a bar downstairs. Happy hour is from 5-9 pm with a 15% discount on cocktails. It is decorated with paintings of famous faces like Che Guevara, Bono with reference to the film Apocalypse Now.

BIA Hoi Corner
(2)
Yes, you read that right: the world's cheapest beer is in Vietnam for just 5,000 VND {about 17 cents). In Hanoi it's easy to find places where this beer is served. It's made every day and the bars often mix the beer with water to get more for their buck. I often add crushed ice to cool it. It's made with malt, hops and is about 50% rice. It has no preservatives, is light and soft, and has 3% alcohol. In Bia hoi, local bars are easy to find with locals willing to chat and have some fun. Sitting on tiny plastic stools, you are transported to another world and carried away by the situation. You shouldn't mix Bia hoi with strong meals because you could get indigestion. I speak from experience. In my case, I had Bia hoi with battered sea snails, which proved to be a very bad combination.

Terrace of Hotel Caravelle
(2)
The terrace of the Hotel Caravelle is the most well known thing about this hotel. It is quite expensive - with an entrance fee payable at street level and high drinks prices ie: 105,000 Dongs for a beer (over € 4). The Caravelle's regular clientele are tourists, many of whom are staying in the hotel or other large hotels nearby. However, the high quality of the band (Cuban musicians) that play there every night (at least in 2009) can justify the prices of the drinks and you can even dance some salsa, cumbia and merengue. Note: Prices are for May 2009
